Charlie’s Story

Charlie has gone from strength to strength at London Ability. He has made lots of friends and the staff have always been very supportive.

Charlie is 21 and began attending London Ability’s I Can Ventures service two years ago, straight after leaving school. Initially the change of routine and prospect of settling into a new environment was overwhelming for Charlie.

However, the I Can Ventures team worked closely with Charlie’s mum Sarah to build his confidence and help Charlie feel comfortable. It took several months of visits with mum Sarah before he would come into the building, and longer still to stay and for Sarah to be able to leave him for a few hours. Sarah became a fixture in the café area, patiently and positively encouraging Charlie to join in activities and engage with the other clients.

Once he settled in, Charlie has thrived at London Ability.

Once he settled in, Charlie has thrived at London Ability. He has made enormous progress and now almost two years later Charlie is full of confidence. He can express his views and make choices. Charlie has lots of friends within I can Ventures, and enjoys all the Healthy living, sporting and community activities. Charlie is also now instrumental in helping new transition clients to settle, understanding their initial worries.

Once he finishes college, Charlie’s next step will be to begin taking part in the “I Can Move On” transition activities towards work and independence.

Charlie’s mum Sarah says, “It was very hard for both Charlie and I adjusting from full time school. I was glad the team we gave me the opportunity to stay as long as needed and gradually reduce my supportive role, slipping away an hour at a time. Since then Charlie has gone from strength to strength at London Ability. Charlie has made lots of friends and the staff have always been very supportive.”
